Wetenschappers gaan koraal invriezen want "riffen vallen toch niet meer te redden"

On a meeting, organised by Globe in Copenhague, scientists and biologists have presented data concerning some consequences of global warming to the 16 most important economies of the world and concluded that the reefs are beyond saving. Even when drastic climate agreements were to be developped and signed by all parties right now, for the reefs it's already too late! The expectation as to when they will be completely destroyed is estimated at 2060, if we're lucky. So they decided to freeze samples of reefs now so they could be placed back into the ocean some time in the future when CO2 levels are lower. Today over 25% of the world's reefs has already been destroyed by aggressive fishing methods, polution and -off course- tourism. Why should we all be shocked by this news? Reefs are the most biodiverse places on our planet. They do not just exist for our enjoyment, they are the basis for all life in the oceans! So by disappearing, the entire food piramid will collapse. Besides this, the barrier reefs protect about 500 million people against storm floods. If you're insensitive to the problem after having read all this, you might just be susceptible to the final reason the article offers, namely the economic consequence. If the barrier reefs disappear, which they will, it will cost over 160 billion each year for the construction of protection against unevitable storm floods. Nowadays reefs bring in 1.2 million euros every year, not only from tourism and fishery, but also medication! Yes indeed, quite some revolutionary medication that came on the market recently was developped thanks to research in reefs!
So I ask you, fellow bloggers, are you feeling comfortable with the lives you are leading? We are destroying our planet. It is not a problem for the next generation, it is our problem! Our parents and us, we have polluted this planet to a point where it might just be too late to save it! I would very much still like to be alive by 2060! Now you might think, "aren't you exaggerating just a bit here?" NO, I'm most certainly NOT! Besides our reefs disappearing because of the rising CO2 levels, we are also allowing many other damaging effects to happen as a consequence of global warming. I would like to refer here to the movies "An inconvenient truth" and "The age of stupid" in which the producers try to warn us for what we are doing to ourselves. By destroying all of our planets' resources, we are in fact committing suicide! These films are not fiction, they are sheer reality! Why are we not using alternative energy? Why are we not driving electric cars? Why must we have luxury everywhere we go, using up mother natures' resources? Why do we take a plane to a neighbouring country, when we can get there by train just as easy? Why do our governments allow this to happen? Because we live in the 'age of stupid', controlled by consumerism. It has gotten a grip of us all. We are spoiled and we all care more about money than anything else in the world. So do our governments. In Britain for example wind parks are protested against by the local population because they would 'damage the view of their beautiful landscape'. Oil companies make huge profits all over the world. Africa contains a lot of oil. Why are the people there still starving? Because companies care about money, not people! In Nigeria, Shell was supposed to extract oil and donate 13% of the profits to local development aid. The cruel reality is that there is still no healthcare, no education and no drinking water in many places. Because of huge oil spills in the rivers near small villages, most fish there have died, those that are still swimming are covered with oil and thus not very nutricious. Our world has become the most ridiculous and immoral place in the universe. Potatoes are being cultivated, transported far far away to then return to the same place but mashed! Milk as well. Let's transport it far away and then bring it right back as yogurt! Are we so incredibly stupid as to not realise the ridiculousness of these actions? Why did America go to war in Iraq? Out of pity for the poor people there having to live under a tiranious regime? Off course not! I don't get the impression they are liberated now. They are more exploited now than ever. Oil is money and money makes everything so damn easy, doesn't it? Water and electricity are so easily obtained it has become no more than normal that we abuse it.
Even if we globally start changing our lives drastically right now as to stabilise the temperature on earth, it would take at least 7 years to get there. The sollution exists, but nobody seems to care about it. A lot of governments will not want to sign climate agreements because it would mean their economies becoming weaker. A lot of people will not want to participate in durable vacations because it would mean less luxury. And why spend many hours on a train when you can get wherever you want by plain in just moments?
Because if we continue living like this, we will go extinct within this and 50 years, that's why! Consumerism is the most widespread selfdestroying sect ever. And it pisses me of that we are kept ignorant.
